Matthew Sheets is an engineering leader, founder, and author based in Pelham, Alabama. He has 18+ years of experience building and scaling secure, high-availability platforms across healthcare, retail, and payments while leading teams through modernization and growth.

At Kroger Health and Wellness, Matthew leads up to 35 people across five teams, with responsibility for patient identity, patient communications, and all operational software supporting Kroger Prescription Plans (KPP), Kroger’s pharmacy benefit management (PBM) offering. His organization supports initiatives tied to 96 million patient records. He helped drive broad adoption of AI coding assistants and establish AI usage patterns across teams building HIPAA-regulated software across Pharmacy, Patient Communications, EMPI, and KPP. His work also includes EMPI and personalization initiatives, a 9% reduction in prescription return-to-stock, and communication strategies that improved patient response and reduced no-show rates.

At Walgreens Boots Alliance, he led teams supporting a national COVID response platform that handled peak booking demand at enterprise scale. His work included Azure and Kubernetes architecture, pharmacy and retail integrations to IC Plus POS, and reliability programs that reduced CPU allocation by more than 65%, saving over $190,000 per month while preserving uptime.

As founder and Director of Technology at Pymt, Matthew built a full retail POS and payments platform used by more than 3,500 merchants across the United States and Canada before a successful exit. He led architecture for online and in-person commerce, designed merchant APIs, and operated in PCI-regulated environments with secure access and data patterns.

Earlier at UAB Medicine, Matthew led software architecture and engineering teams in one of the largest academic medical environments in the country. His teams built more than eight commercially viable software products that were sold to other organizations. These included an award-winning Patient Consent Platform covering all types of patient consent, including informed consent; patient pre-visit forms; and Unity, a lab specimen tracking platform spanning clinics, hospitals, and community locations. In direct partnership with Apple, his teams also delivered an early FHIR platform connecting Cerner (now Oracle Health) records to Apple Health Records. His work also included patient messaging, analytics and reporting systems, and an award-winning 340B reconciliation platform.
